Global Community High School

Educating The World

iPad Initiative

Taking the lead in 21st century teaching and the effective use of technology in the classroom, Global Community HS announced that all students had access to an iPad 2 beginning fall of 2011. As the first phase of the iPad initiative, the school deployed 32 of the tablets for teachers, the librarian, counselors, and academic support staff, so they can begin preparing for the introduction of the devices to students during quarter two. Professional development throughout the year has and will continue to focus on effective use of the iPad in the classroom.

The second phase of implementation will begin fall 2012, when each and every student will move to a one-to-one ratio. This means that each student enrolled at Global will have the opportunity to take an iPad 2 home each afternoon, using the device for research, homework, and day to day school activities. We believe that students will find this method to much more enriching and our goal is to see a rise in test scores, student engagement, and assignment completion. Each student wishing to be a part of this initiative will be asked to place a $25 deposit that will be returned at the end of the school year.

When did students start using the iPad in school?
Beginning in the fall of 2011, teachers began issuing students iPads for reading, note-taking, speaking & listening, taking assessments, and exploring all areas of the curriculum. Several teachers made the iPad a daily part of their academic program(s). In 2012, students and teachers will be expanding the usage of the device both inside and outside of the classroom.

Do students take home their iPads ?
Yes.  Students who place a $25 deposit will be permitted to take home the device. A special case will also be issued to help prevent breakage and damage. Each classroom is also equipped with a syncing cart and a Macbook. A class set of iPads constantly sync and charge on each respective cart. Each cart is secured to the classroom wall and is non-mobile. Global does maintain one mobile cart available for check out and/or demonstration purposes. These iPads will be available to students who choose not to pay the take home deposit.

Can my child opt out of using the iPad?
Global is committed to using the iPad 2 to supplement and enhance the traditional classroom experience; therefore, we encourage all staff members and students to utilize and explore the iPad at least once per week.

When will WiFi be available on campus?
All academic areas currently have WiFi access.

If students already own an iPad or another tablet, can they bring it to school each day?
We are committed to using the iPad 2 in the classroom for the 2012-2013 school year and beyond.  Those students who own the original iPad may experience some difficulty completing assignments that utilize features exclusive to the iPad 2.  We will not be supporting other tablets. Additionally, we do not encourage students to bring such expensive equipment to school.

Will my child still need a computer even if he/she has an iPad?
It is important to note that the iPad is not a replacement for a computer.  Global will continue to provide access to computers on campus to support specific programs.  Students may feel more comfortable completing some assignments off campus on a computer.

I have a PC at home, not a Mac; will the iPad work with my PC?
Yes, the iPad 2 requires the use of the iTunes program, which is a free download available for both PC and Mac.

Will students be able to checkout iPads over the summer?
No. Global will utilize the iPads over the summer during our Summer School program. All iPads will be returned and inventoried during the last few weeks of the school year.

Will parents be trained on using the iPad?
We will be working with parents throughout the 2012-2013 school year to help them learn and explore the iPad2s.  Optional parent training is anticipated to be available during Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) meetings.  It is important that parents are familiar with the technology in which their children are using in school.

What apps will be used?
We will be researching apps throughout the school year. Global has also formed a Research & Development Team (R&D) to keep abreast with new and education related apps that will enhance students’ learning and classroom engagement.
